Marie is a 37 year old single parent with two children, living in London and studying for a Certificate in Teaching English to speakers of other languages, at the college of North West London.

‘I have been a single mother for six and a half years. It has been a very difficult period for me for me both financially and personally trying to provide for my boys. I have had limited help from my family, mainly help with buying clothes, shoes and other necessities for the boys. In September of this year my youngest son started full time nursery. In anticipation of this I made an application to the College of North West London at the beginning of this year hoping I would qualify and be accepted on their CELTA course, to obtain my first certificate. I received a letter in June to confirm that I did qualify for a place on the course. I was so excited that I was given such an important opportunity. Thanks to the grant I have received from the Horizons programme, I feel I have begun a new chapter in my life to enable me to return to full time employment once I have gained my first certificate in teaching. This in turn will enable me to support my children independently and provide a better future for us. It will also help in the long term to get out of debt.’
