Family Action and Barclaycard Horizons have been providing educational grants for the last three years. The following are real stories from people we have helped to achieve their goal of furthering their education.
Janet is a 30 year old single parent with two children. She is studying Access to Science at Liverpool Community College.
"My ultimate goal is to be a secondary school teacher and when I’ve completed this course I intend to go to university to do a mathematics degree and then on to a one year PGCE course. I am experiencing difficulties with the financial aspects of my course. For example, I find travel costs, books, calculator, stationery and writing materials, difficult to fund due to other pressing demands on my already low income. I am not qualified in any profession and I am currently unemployed. I have no wish to remain this way.
For me this course offers a realistic hope of employment and a better life for me and my children. Unfortunately I fear that without further financial support through the Horizons programme, I will be unable to continue on to this course and will therefore have no hope of achieving the goals that I have set for myself."
Janet was awarded a grant of £200
